Are You Prepared For The Swine Flu?

The World Health Organization and the Center for Disease Control officially declared the Swine Flu a pandemic in the spring of 2009.  This had many people confused since there was not that many confirmed cases or deaths.  That amount of cases or deaths is not what has these officials concerned, it is the parallels to the Spanish Flu of 1918 that has everyone so concerned.

What IS Swine Flu?

Swine Flu is a novel strain of influenza (H1N1) for which humans do not have any natural immunity.  First identified in Mexico in the 2009, the Swine Flu is a combination of different existing flu viruses that have come together to make a new and very dangerous virus.

People seem to be divided into two camps; one thinks that there is nothing to worry about and the other thinks this is going to be the end of mankind - both these extremes are incorrect.  Although this is a dangerous virus it is not going to wipe man off the earth but it is here and it is dangerous and the Swine Flu does need to be taken seriously.

Why Are Doctors And Health Officials So Concerned?

.In 1918 the Spanish Flu pandemic killed millions of people.  What made it so dangerous is who it killed; the majority of people that dies from Spanish Flu were the people who were supposed to be at the lowest risk to getting sick.

With the Swine Flu the same seems to be true.  Usually the high risk people for influenza are the very young and the elderly.  What has the health officials so concerned is that a disproportionate number of people between the ages of 20 and 45 have died from being infected with the Swine Flu virus.  This is the age group that is supposed to get sick less often and recover much faster when they do get sick.

What Is The Real Danger?

The real danger is that people will not take the Swine Flu seriously and will wait to the very last minute to try and prepare for this pandemic.  Ignorance in this case could be deadly.  Millions of people are going to get infected with Swine Flu this year, and sadly many people will die.  But there are steps we can take to prepare for this disease and even prevent it.

What Can Be Done About This?

We are in a unique period in human history.  For  the first time we have the ability to get out in front of this pandemic and take certain steps to lessen its impact.  Of course there are seemingly simple things like hand washing, wearing face masks, and vaccination.  But there is also the steps we can take to boost our immune systems, to distance ourselves from our community if we get sick or if many are sick around us.

There really is too much to try and list everything in just one article.  Luckily there is alot of great information so we can get educated in what we need to do individually to collectively make a difference in our communities.  The problem is that there is so much information out there it is hard to tell what is true and what is hype.

Get all the facts and learn what you can do to prevent Swine Flu.  Prepare for Swine Flu today with the Swine Flu Safety Handbook.

Prevent Swine Flu With Natural Cures

Alot of people are worried about Swine Flu and think that the only way to combat it is with a vaccine.  The only problem is that the one we have has been fast tracked and nobody is sure if it will work.  don't be too worried though because we do know that there are natural treatments for the Flu that will certainly be effective for H1N1.

H1N2 has been creating a terror effects all round the and has been declared pandemic in most part of the world. This is caused by influenza A (Swine Flu) virus. Swine flu is H1N1, or pig influenza - an acute respiratory infection, usually affects pigs, but the ability to pounce and man. Presumably, the virus appeared after the animal is picked up one of several varieties of the germ - a new strain, scientists have found traces of the North American pig influenza or swine flu, the North American avian influenza, and swine and human germ commonly found in Asia and Europe. The first cases of human infection by virus reported on 18 March in Mexico.

What are Swine influenza symptoms?

• High temperature

• Cough

• Shortness of breath, Feel Trouble in breathing

The most significant symptoms of a H1N1 infection are the fever with chills, body ache and exhaustion, a cough and sore throat, nausea, and diarrhea.

Tamiflu Worked With Avian Flu - What About Swine Flu?

Tamiflu, whose common scientific name is oseltamivir, is part of a family of flu fighting medicines called neuraminidase inhibitors. Tamilflu is used in the treatment of infections caused by both the influenza A and influenza B viruses. Tamiflu, which requires a prescription, can be used both to treat the flu if taken soon after symptoms appear, or to prevent the flu. The difference between Tamiflu and a vaccine is that Tamiflu helps your immune system be in a position to fight off the advance of the viral infection, whereas a vaccine is just a straight injection of dead influenza that causes your immune system to produce antibodies to fight off the virus itself.

Tamiflu demand has skyrocketed over the past year for several reasons. There was a shortage of available flu vaccine during flu season 2005, with in some cases only enough for senior citizens or those with more vulnerable immune conditions being able to get vaccinated. Also, the U.S. government was concerned that an outbreak of bird flu in the United States could leave the U.S. short on flu vaccines, causing them to hold back supplies just in case of an outbreak. However, the bird flu is different form human influenza. This is exacly the same scenario as swine flu today.

Bird Flu is much harder to transmit than human influenza, requiring very close physical contact to spread the disease. Bird flu has been observed in countries where humans and animals are in close contact. There have been roughly 70 deaths worldwide and approximately 130 infections since 2005. The primary concern of health officials around the world is that bird flu will infect a person already carrying the human influenza strain, and that the two viruses will somehow swap genetic material, causing the bird flu to mutate into a virus that spreads much faster through the air, like human influenza, only this virus would be more deadly. A highly virulent straight of mutated bird flu could create a pandemic for the world, as did the Spanish Flu virus of the early 1900's that killed 20 to 50 million people worldwide.

Unfprtunately, swine flu is much closer to the spanish flu than the bird flu was. We did however learn alot from the bird flu outbreak that prepared us for what is certain to be a sever pandemic of the swine flu.

The bird flu is associated with the influenza A strain H5N1 flu virus. Although not the same as the Spanish flu virus, the current avian flu strain does share many similarities with the Spanish flu strain. Initial studies have shown that Tamiflu may be effective in helping to fight the effects of this flu virus if the medication is taken very early after flu symptoms appear. As a result, the demand for Tamiflu has skyrocketed as consumers have rushed to their doctors to obtain prescriptions and gone online to buy the drug from internet pharmacies.

Similar results have been documented with the swine flu. When Tamiflu is taken very early on it does appear to have a popsitive effect in combating the virus.

A Swiss drug maker, F. Hoffman La-Roche Ltd., currently has a tight hold on the manufacturing of Tamiflu. Biolyse Pharma Corp., when turned down in its bid to try to enter the Tamiflu marketplace, had decided as of December of 2005 to attempt to mass produce several tons of shikimic acid, which is the main ingredient in Tamiflu, from the needles of discarded Christmas trees, as well as other pine, fir, and spruce trees. Such trees are the main source of shikimic acid.

Oseltamivir, sold under the brand name Tamiflu, is one of several medications approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment and prevention of influenza. The CDC has announced that a swine flu vaccine should be available fall 2009.

The World Health Organization has declared a swine flu pandemic; the first global flu epidemic in 41 years. Will you be prepared if this pandemic shows itself in your community?
What is the Swine Flu and how does it differ from regular seasonal flu?  How concerned should you be about this pandemic?  Is there any way to protect myself and my family from this new virus?
These (and many more) are the questions that prompted the research that led to the Swine Flu Safety handbook.  It was a challenging endeavor to sift through all the information available to get the facts out about Swine Flu.
Below are just a few important basic tips to help get prepared this flu season.  In the coming weeks you will be receiving more in depth information to help you prevent Swine Flu in your home.
Last spring in the US there was more than 13000 cases of Swine Flu and at least 27 deaths.  The CDC (Center for disease Control) gives this advice for people who come down with Swine Flu:
1. If you get the Swine Flu (or Flu-like symptoms) stay home for at least 7 days after the start of the illness.
2. Don't give aspirin to children or teenagers with the Flu, according to the CDC this could cause a rare but serious illness called Reyes syndrome.  Double check labels on medications for children to make sure they do not contain aspirin.
3. Don't give a child younger than 2 an over-the-counter cold medication without speaking first to a doctor or nurse.
.
4. For older children, drugs such as Tylenol, Advil, Motrin, Nuprin and Aleve can be used to relieve symptoms but not to address the underlying infection.
5. If the sick person has difficulty breathing, chest pain, purple or blue discoloration of the lips, seizures, is vomiting and unable to keep liquids down, has signs of dehydration (dizziness when standing, absence of urination, a lack of tears when infants cry), or becomes confused or less responsive - seek emergency medical care.
6. To prevent spreading the illness the CDC recommends that the sick person stay in a separate room, if possible, with the door closed. If the person needs to be in a common area of the house, he or she should wear a surgical mask. If possible, have only one adult take care of the sick person. Ask everyone at home to clean his or her hands regularly with soap and water.
7. Anti-virals can be used to prevent the flu, so check with your health-care provider" to see if you or other people in the household should take the medications
These are some great tips and should be followed.
The best tip however is to learn how to prevent the Swine Flu from affecting your family.  Some may think this is impossible, that if one is going to sick, they are going to sick and there is nothing you can do about it.  That is a complete falsehood.
That is precisely why the Swine Flu Safety Handbook was written - to teach people how to prepare for this pandemic so that they don't have to sick this year.
Wishing you the best of health,
Kevin

Should you wear a face-mask?  Do they help?  Is it over reacting?
These are the questions people seem to ask the most when talking about face masks.  The fact is that if you are infected, are around someone who is infected, or you are going to be in a situation where you just don't know - face masks are an effective way to keep you safe.
Surgical masks will not work, neither will the masks you can buy at the hardware store to help protect you from dust.
What you need is a a mask with a 'N95' rating.  The N95 rating means that the mask will trap 95% of all pathogens that are greater than 1/3 of a micron in size. H1N1 virus is smaller than the mask pores, and theoretically should be able to pass right through, but  when someone coughs or sneezes the virus it is enveloped in moisture which is larger than the mask pores and so is effectively trapped.
There really is not a way not to be around people; it is just not practical to lock yourself in your house.  We all still need to go to the grocery store and get gas and maybe to school.  Also, during a pandemic, people will actually be banned from public places without a face mask.
When out in public and wearing a mask it is very difficult to get infected - This is because the most common way people contract the flu viruses is from hand to mouth.  You touch something, then you scratch the corner of your mouth - well if you touched a door or some other object with a virus on it - now you have it.  But when you are wearing a mask - you can't touch your mouth.
When you leave the store, wash your hands (or use hand sanitizer and now it is safe to touch your face again.
For everyone who has the forsight to stockpile face masks there are probably a thousand who haven't. And during a pandemic face masks will be impossible to obtain. It took less than a week for every major supplier to run out of masks in April. If you have extra masks you'll be able to help your less prescient friends.
There are a lot of different face masks out there. How can you tell which ones to buy?
Fitzz.com is a superstore that has everything you need to stock up -

When you get to the page click on 'Medical Supplies' and then on H1N1 protection

a smaller site that is recommended is Health swine Flu.com

Masks are an important safety device and they can make all the difference.  They will be in short supply when we hit the height of the flu season.

Here is to your very best health,
Kevin
